Alabaster lighting uses thin pieces of natural alabaster stone as the shade or diffuser of a lamp. Spanish alabaster is valued for its fine grain, natural veining and soft, translucent glow. Because every piece is cut from real stone, no two lamps are exactly alike.
What is alabaster?
Alabaster is a fine-grained, translucent natural stone, a form of gypsum. It has been carved into vessels, windows and lamps for centuries. Unlike glass or plastic, it does not produce a flat, uniform light. When a light source sits behind a thin slice of alabaster, the stone absorbs and scatters the light, so it comes out as a soft, even glow.
Why Spanish alabaster?
Spain has a long tradition of quarrying and carving alabaster. SPACE361 sources its alabaster from Spanish quarries, chosen for its clean, creamy tone and its delicate natural patterns. The stone is cut and shaped into panels, globes, capsules and blocks, then paired with brass or black metalwork.
How does an alabaster lamp look when lit?
Switched on, an alabaster lamp glows from within. The light is warm, gentle and low in glare. Switched off, the stone still looks like a sculpture, with soft cloud-like veining. That is why designers use alabaster fixtures as both lighting and decoration.
Where does alabaster lighting work best?
Alabaster suits calm, refined interiors: living rooms, bedrooms, dining areas, executive offices, hotel lobbies, private clubs and restaurants. It works across quiet-luxury, modern, American, French and European styles.
